Northwest Africa 13613 (NWA 13613)

Purchased: 2019 Jun

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5)

History: A single stone weighing 675 g was found by an anonymous finder in Western Sahara and purchased in June 2019 at the Erfoud Market by Giovanni Pratesi for the Earth Sciences Dept of Unifi.

Physical characteristics: The main mass is partially covered by brown, stained fusion crust.

Petrography: (V. Moggi Cecchi, G. Pratesi, UniFi): The thin section displays an equilibrated chondritic texture, with various chondrule types (PP, PO and BO) set in a fine grained matrix. Both olivine and orthopyroxene are homogeneous. Iron oxides, Fe-Ni alloys and troilite are the main opaque phases and can be found as individual grains scattared in the matrix or rimming chondrules

Geochemistry: EMP (V. Moggi Cecchi, G. Pratesi, UniFi); Olivine in both chondrules and matrix (Fa25.1±0.3Fo74.9±0.4; n=20); low-Ca pyroxene in both chondrules and matrix (Fs21.5±0.3En76.9±1.1Wo1.6±0.3; n=17);

Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (L5); S1; W3;

Specimens: The main mass, weighing 675 g, the type specimen, weighing 21.5 g , and one thin section are on deposit at MSN-FI (Inventory # I-3582).
