Northwest Africa 13516 (NWA 13516)

Purchased: 2020 Sep

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated)

History: Purportedly found in the Adrar region, Algeria. Bought from a meteorite dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Physical characteristics: Isometric individual without fusion crust.

Petrography (K. Metzler, IfP): Unbrecciated coarse-grained basalt with ophitic to subophitic texture, consisting of about 60% pyroxene and 40% plagioclase. Pyroxene with augite exsolution lamellae (typical width 1-4 µm). Accessories are a silica polymorph, ilmenite, chromite, and traces of Ni-poor metal.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Composition of low-Ca pyroxene: Fs55.1±0.7 Wo3.2±0.3 (Fs54.1-56.3 Wo2.7-3.6); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 33.1; n=10. Composition of Ca-rich pyroxene (exsolution lamellae): Fs25.8±1.5Wo39.0±2.2 (Fs24.7-29.0Wo35.1-41.2); n=9. Composition of plagioclase: An88.3±1.3Or0.2±0.3 (An86.7-90.6Or0.0-0.5); n=10.
