Bechar, Algeria

Find: 2018 Oct

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: The meteorite was found in the region of Bechar, Algeria, by the military.

Physical characteristics: A single piece of 126 g, completely covered by a fusion crust.

Petrography: (I. Kerraouch; A. Bischoff, IfP) Chondrules, chondrule fragments, and CAIs are embedded in a fine-grained brownish matrix, which has an abundance of about 30 vol%. The majority of chondrules have Fe-poor mineral constituents and the mean apparent chondrule size is about 200 µm. The sample is moderately weathered.

Geochemistry: (K. Klemm; A. Bischoff, IfP) Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Random measurements of olivine grains revealed Fa19.1±18.8 (Fa0.5-57.5); n=30. Random measurements of low-Ca pyroxene grains revealed Fs2.1±1.0Wo1.6±1.5 (Fs0.6-4.4Wo0.4-5.0); n=15.

Classification: CO3 chondrite based on small chondrule size, chondrule-matrix ratio, texture, and mineral chemistry.

Specimens: 4.55 g in IfP, 121 g in Algeria (IST-USTHB)
