Northwest Africa 13642 (NWA 13642)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: Ureilite

History: Purchased in January 2020 by Yang Shun-Chung from Naji Lahbib in Guelmim, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Single stone with weathered fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Specimen displays a coarse-grained cumulate texture (Av. 2 mm, up to 3 mm) composed primarily of olivine (some contain melt inclusions) and pigeonite (some are twinned). Most olivine and a few pigeonite grains display reduced rims in contact with either graphite or Fe-Ni metal. Some kamacite and troilite grains have been weathered to form Fe-oxides, some dispersed as veins throughout the specimen.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa7.6±2.8, range Fa1.2-10.7, Cr2O3=0.6±0.1 wt%, CaO=0.3±0.1 wt%, n=34), Pigeonite (Fs9.1±1.2Wo9.1±0.4, range Fs3.1-9.9Wo7.5-9.8, Cr2O3=0.9±0.1 wt%, Al2O3=0.7±0.1 wt%, n=33).
