Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13645 (NWA 13645)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark-grayish interior and has a fine-grained gabbroic texture predominantly composed of up to 700 µm sized calcic pyroxene and often lath-shaped maskelynite grains both showing irregular compositional zoning. Slightly zoned Fe-rich olivine is a minor phase and often contains magmatic inclusions. Accessories include ilmenite, ulvospinel, pyrrhotite, and merrillite. The meteorite is highly shocked and contains shock melt veins and pockets. Calcite-filled veins and secondary barite indicate a severe degree of terrestrial alteration.

Geochemistry: complex zoned pyroxene: Fs29.9±5.4Wo10.3±2.8 (Fs22.6-40.3Wo3.7-14.1, FeO/MnO=30±3, n=19); olivine: Fa40.8±1.6 (Fa38.5-43.7, FeO/MnO=55±2, n=10); maskelynite: An65.2±2.4Ab34.4±2.4Or0.4±0.1 (An61.3-69.6Ab30.0-38.3Or0.2-0.6, n=18)
