Northwest Africa 13650 (NWA 13650)

Purchased: 2020 Oct

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia with well defined, partly flattened chondrules (mean diameter about 350 μm) embedded into abundant matrix predominatly composed of ferroan olivine. Compositionally unequilibrated olivine and pyroxene occur in chondrules and as single mineral fragments in the matrix. Minor phases include Ca-pyroxene, sodic plagioclase, Ti-bearing chromite as well as sulfides and their terrestrial alteration products; no metal has been detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa28.0±14.8 (Fa2.7-49.9, n=17); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs14.6±10.1Wo0.7±0.4 (Fs2.4-27.8Wo0.4-1.7, n=12); Ca-pyroxene: Fs12.9±0.9Wo43.2±1.0 (Fs12.0-14.8Wo41.1-44.2, n=6); feldspar: An12.1±1.0Ab84.5±1.2Or3.5±0.4 (An10.9-13.6Ab82.8-85.6Or3.6-4.0, n=4)
