Northwest Africa 13687 (NWA 13687)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Jan

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Temara, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Many brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a monomict achondritic breccia predominantly composed of up to 3 mm sized orthopyroxene crystals set into fine-grained clastic matrix. Orthopyroxenes contain Ca-pyroxene inclusions with very fine exsolution lamellae. Myrmekitic silica-chromite intergrowth are present at the opx-cpx grain boundaries. Minor phases are silica, chromite, FeS, and metallic Fe. No feldspar has been detected in the thin section studied. The meteorite contains calcite-filled cracks.
