Northwest Africa 13693 (NWA 13693)

Purchased: 2017

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3.15)

History: Purchased in Tucson in 2017 by Nicholas Gessler from a Moroccan meteorite dealer.

Physical characteristics: Sub-rounded specimen, broken into 5 pieces, completely covered with relict fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Specimen is composed of well-defined chondrules (Av. 800±100 µm, n=28) and a few clasts (up to 4 mm, n=3) set in a primarily opaque matrix. Most chondrules preserve their primary isotropic glassy mesostasis, although some contain devitrified mesostasis.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa15.2±9.1, range Fa1.1-38.7, CaO wt% =0.15±0.07, n=39), Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine (0.25±0.09, range 0.05-0.42, n=34), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs8.3±6.7Wo0.7±0.5, range Fs0.9-29.1Wo0.2-2.0, n=21).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3.15). LL group is due to average chondrule diameter and magnetic susceptibility (low value due to weathering). Subtype is estimated to be 3.15 based on 1) mean Cr2O3 value and standard deviation of ferroan olivines (Grossman and Brearley, 2005), 2) The presence of a primarily opaque matrix and primary isotropic glass mesostasis in most chondrules, 3) The large observed range in Fa, Fs, and CaO concent of olivines (Huss et al., 2006).

Specimens: 24 grams at UCLA, main mass with Nicholas Gessler.
