Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13711 (NWA 13711)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: March 2020

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

Physical characteristics: A single crusted stone broken in multiple fragments. Cut surface reveals a dark interior with small chondrules.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrite with chondrules (apparent average diameter 300±160 µm, n=27) and mineral clasts set in an abundant (79 vol%, by point counting, n=286), fine-grained, iron-rich matrix. Chondrules have fine grained dust rims.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa13.2±16.6, range Fa0.4-44.7 (n=9), Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.46±0.14 (n=6). Pyroxene Fs1.3Wo4.0 and Fs7.5Wo4.6 (n=2). Defocused matrix analyses FeO = 35.2 wt%, analytical total 84.2 wt% (n=2). The low total reveals the presence of hydrous phases in the matrix.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Kuntz.
