Northwest Africa 13775 (NWA 13775)

Purchased: 2021 Jan

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: The meteorite was purchased by the main mass holder from a dealer in Temara, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Many small, light-brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a porphyritic texure of up to 1.3 mm sized strongly zoned olivine phenocrysts set in a groundmass of zoned pigeonite and maskelynite. Olivine often contains magmatic inclusions with radial cracks extending into the host. Minor minerals are small homogeneous olivine, chromite, ilmenite, and pyrrhotite. Contains shock melt veins.

Geochemistry: olivine phenocrysts: Fa40.9±13.6 (Fa27.0-60.3, FeO/MnO=47±3, n=9); small olivine: Fa45.7±0.1, FeO/MnO=47±2, n=3; complex zoned pyroxene: Fs33.0±9.5Wo18.6±11.7 (Fs23.4-46.8Wo5.3-43.1, FeO/MnO=29±3, n=8); maskelynite: An51.3±2.6Ab46.8±2.3Or1.9±0.3 (An47.8-55.0Ab43.6-49.9Or1.3-2.3, n=8)
