Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13786 (NWA 13786)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Martian meteorite (Nakhlite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in early 2021.

Physical characteristics: Almost black friable rock without fusion crust. Displays a deep-greenish interior with apparent lath shaped crystals.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a cumulate texture and is predominantly composed of compositionally zoned often prismatic augite (up to 1.5 mm) with interstitial plagioclase and alkali feldspathic glass. Less abundant minerals are Fe-rich olivine, ferropigeonite, titanomagnetite, ilmenite, and chlorapatite. Olivine contains low-Ca pyroxene-titanomagnetite symplectites and "iddingsitic" material.

Geochemistry: augite: Fs25.6±4.1Wo38.8±0.4 (Fs21.2-30.1Wo38.3-40.0, FeO/MnO=32±3, n=14); ferropigeonite: Fs55.1±2.9Wo11.0±3.5 (Fs50.9-58.7Wo7.1-16.2, FeO/MnO=31±1, n=8); olivine: Fa67.1±0.9 (Fa65.8-68.0, FeO/MnO=46±2, n=12); plagioclase: An34.9±3.5Or3.7±0.5 (An30.0-38.0Or3.3-4.4, n=3); intercumulus glass: Ab59.9±7.9An10.2±4.3Or29.9±12.1, N=8

Classification: Martian (nakhlite)

Specimens: 5.5 g including a polished mount at MNB; main mass with Mr. Salamu Ali.
