Northwest Africa 13851 (NWA 13851)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Light grayish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is an unbrecciated basalt composed of exsolved pyroxene and often lath-shaped calcic plagioclase grains up to 1 mm in size. Minor phases include silica, ilmenite, chromite, and FeS. No metallic iron has been detected.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene: Fs60.4±0.2Wo1.9±0.1 (Fs60.0-60.7Wo1.8-2.1, FeO/MnO=28-29, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs26.2±0.3Wo44.0±0.3 (Fs25.6-26.8Wo43.3-44.3, FeO/MnO=26-29, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An89.3±1.1 (An87.6-90.9, n=7).
