Northwest Africa 13853 (NWA 13853)

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock with minor fusion crust. Exposes very large, up to 3 cm sized chondrules at its surface.

Petrography: Carbonaceous chondrite exhibits a grayish to slightly greenish interior and is composed of large well-defined chondrules, up to 6 mm sized CAIs, and olivine amoeboids embedded into a fine-grained brownish-black matrix. Chondrule apparent mean diameter is 1.1 mm with a maximum of about 7 mm in the thin section and slice studied. At the meteorite surface up to 3 cm sized chondrules are visible. Contains type I and type II chondrules. Several chondrules show brownish staining due to terrestrial alteration. Opaque phases are rare metal and sulfides and their abundant alteration products.

Geochemistry: Ni in sulfides 17.7±2.1 wt%, N=4.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3). Oxidized subgroup based on high concentrations of Ni in sulfides Gattacceca et al., 2020.
