Writeup from MB 110:
Ramlat Fasad 516 19°00.427’N, 53°20.529’E Zufar, Oman Find: 31 Jan 2017 Classification: Ureilite History: A single fragment was found during a search for meteorites. Physical characteristics: Dark brown fragment, strongly wind-ablated, no fusion crust Petrography: (J. Pape, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) The sample consist mainly of olivine and pigeonite with very minor low-Ca pyroxene and shows the characteristic ureilitic texture, typical grain size is 1-3 mm. Olivine has reduced rims with minute Fe metal inclusions, partly oxidized due to weathering. Carbon platelets (up to 3.5 mm in length) consist of diamond. Shock grade of silicates is low (S2). Medium weathering, most iron metal oxidized while silicates are not affected. Geochemistry: (J. Pape, NMBE) Olivine cores Fa21.9±0.3, Fe/Mn 46±2, Cr2O3 0.54±0.25 wt% (N = 17), reduced olivine rims have Fa>9.7. Pigeonite has Fs18.3±0.1Wo10.6±0.1, Cr2O3 1.18±0.04 wt% (N = 18). Classification: Based on texture, mineralogy and geochemistry this is an unbrecciated, monomict, ferroan ureilite. Specimens: All at NMBE, including one polished thin section. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
