Writeup from MB 110:

Ramlat Fasad 519        18°58.151’N, 53°28.426’E

Zufar, Oman

Find: 03 Feb 2017

Classification: Ureilite

History: A single fragment was found during a search for meteorites.

Physical characteristics: Dark brown-olive wind ablated stone, 5 cm maximum dimension. A coarser grained lithology is present in part of the stone. No fusion crust.

Petrography: (S. Rout, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) The meteorite consists dominantly of olivine and pigeonite with characteristic ureilitic texture, primary grain size is 1-3 mm. Large regions of olivine show secondary reduction with minute inclusions of Fe metal. All pyroxene grains show signatures of recrystallization and contain two types of pigeonites, enstatite, augite, interstitial glass and Fe-metal grains. Primary silicate grains show low shock (S2). Carbon platelets are irregular in shape, to 1 mm, consist of diamond and fine-grained graphite. Medium weathering (most iron metal oxidized, silicates are unaffected).

Geochemistry: (S. Rout, Bern) Olivine cores: Fa19.5±0.2, Fe/Mn = 42±4, Cr2O3=0.67±0.05 wt% (N = 40), reduced rims have Fa9.4±4.8 (N = 16). Pigeonite cores: Fs16.5±0.3Wo11.1±0.2, Cr2O3 1.20±0.03 wt% (N = 31), recrystallized pigeonite: Fs9.5±1.2Wo9.4±1.6 (N = 17). Enstatite: Fs12.3±1.7Wo4.4±0.3 (N = 5). Single augite grain: Fs6.5Wo29.6. Glass: Na2O 2.8 wt%, CaO 4.2 wt%, Al2O3 16.3 wt%, SiO2 74.2 wt% (N = 2).

Classification: Based on texture, mineralogy and geochemistry this is a ferroan ureilite. Paired with Ramlat Fasad 517

Specimens: 21.59 g including one polished thin section at NMBE, main mass: MHTO
