Writeup from MB 110:

Ramlat Fasad 524        19°07.051’N, 53°37.601’E

Zufar, Oman

Find: 08 Feb 2017

Classification: Ureilite

History: A single individual was found during a search for meteorites.

Physical characteristics: Brown, elongated oriented individual, 1.5x3.0 cm, remnants of fusion crust present on the back side.

Petrography: (Å. Rosén, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) Polymict breccia with various clast types: (A) main lithology (probably a large clast) is an ureilitic breccia with mineral clasts up to 3 mm, partly reduced olivine and coarse pigeonite, carbon platelets (diamond) up to 0.4 mm. Silicate at various shock levels (2-4), some olivine clasts are mosaicized. B) Probable chondrite clast, 0.4x0.1 mm, consisting of sub- to euhedral olivine, showing compositional zoning, in glassy matrix. C) microcrystalline clast consisting of FeS, oxidized Fe metal and silicates (average composition close to enstatite) and elongated FeS grains up to 25 μm, D) single plagioclase clast of 100x150 μm, An78Ab20Or02 based on EDX, E) melt(?)-clast consisting of feldspatic glass (EDX: Ab97Or03) with dendritic high-ca-pyroxene inclusions and one large grain of Ca-phosphate. The sample contains many other ureilitic clasts, some with graphite, some with diamond. Medium weathering (most iron is oxidized, silicates are unaffected).

Geochemistry: (Å. Rosén, NMBE): Dominant clast A: Olivine cores Fa20.0±1.1, Fe/Mn = 39.5±4.2, Cr2O3 0.79±0.07 wt% (N = 23) and Fa>7 in reduced rims; pigeonite cores Fs18.6±0.5 Wo8.2±0.3 (N = 19); probable chondrite clast B: Olivine Fa21.4-28.7 (N = 3); microcrystalline clast C: enstatite Fs0.8±0.2 (N = 4).

Classification: This is a polymict ureilite (dominant lithology ferroan), containing fragments of possible volcanic origin and a clast of chondritic material. Possibly paired with Ramlat Fasad 523 found at a distance of only 12 m.

Specimens: All at NMBE, including one polished thin section.
