Writeup from MB 110:

Ramlat Fasad 526        18°56.309’N, 53°19.797’E

Zufar, Oman

Find: 06 Feb 2018

Classification: Ureilite

History: A rust-brown fragment was found during a search for meteorites.

Physical characteristics: Irregular fragment of 2.5 cm maximum size.

Petrography: (J. Pape, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) Silicate grains with a typical grain size of 2-3 mm show weak parallel orientation. The silicates are strongly fractured, strong undulous extincion and parallel fractures in olivine, indicating moderate shock (S3). Reduction affects silicate rims (typically 100 μm wide) and areas of fracturing in olivine. Strong weathering with partial alteration of olivine. Some metallic Fe and troilite preserved as inclusions in silicates. Carbon platelets are diamond-rich and up to 2.5 mm in size.

Geochemistry: (J. Pape, NMBE) Olivine cores Fa23.3±0.4, Fe/Mn 49±2, Cr2O3 0.72±0.03 wt% (N = 17), reduced Ol rims have Fa>2.7. Pigeonite has Fs19.6±0.2Wo7.9±0.1, Cr2O3 1.06±0.03 wt% (N = 18).

Classification: Based on texture, mineralogy and geochemistry this is an unbrecciated, monomict, ferroan ureilite.

Specimens: 1.632 g including one polished thin section at NMBE, main mass: MHTO
