Northwest Africa 13872 (NWA 13872)

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Eleven dark brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a light brownish interior and is composed of about equal parts of metal and silicates. Silicate-dominated regions predominantly consist of compositionally zoned low-Ca-pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Pyroxene often contain small plagioclase grains and vice versa. Ca-pyroxene is present as blebby and lamellar exsolutions in low-Ca pyroxene. Minor phases are silica, Ti-chromite, FeS, and Mg-merrillite. Metal is present as small irregular shaped aggregates and as up to 2 cm large nodules. Kamacite dominates over taenite; contains minor schreibersite.

Geochemistry: zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs29.1±2.2Wo3.6±0.7 (Fs25.2-32.0Wo2.2-4.8, FeO/MnO=15-23, n=11); augite exsolutions: Fs14.9±1.1Wo41.5±1.9 (Fs13.5-16.4Wo38.1-43.0, FeO/MnO=14-17, n=11); calcic plagioclase: An92.3±1.3 (An91.1-95.1, n=10)
