Northwest Africa 13760 (NWA 13760)

Purchased: March 2020

Classification: Iron meteorite

History: Collected by an anonymous finder in the Sahara. Bought in Tindouf, Algeria.

Physical characteristics: A single dark piece.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) The meteorite is made of 73 vol% Fe,Ni metal (kamacite, and plessite), and 27 vol% troilite in the form of convoluted connected grains, sometimes enclosing metal. Schreibersite is found adjacent to troilite. Other minerals: chromite (to 200 µm), phosphate (to 100 µm).

Geochemistry: Kamacite Fe93.7Ni7.50Co0.79 (wt%, n=4). Taenite Fe68.7Ni32.8Co0.26 (wt%, n=1). Phosphate: P2O5 39.6, FeO 36.4, Na2O 9.3, MgO 6.2, K2O 4.6, MnO 4.0 (wt%, n=1).

Classification: Iron. Reminiscent of other sulfide-rich iron meteorites such as Northwest Africa 8480 and Sahara 03505.

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Kuntz.
