Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13910 (NWA 13910)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Jan

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: Purchased by Grant Harkness in January 2021 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Complex polymict breccia containing multiple types of lithic clasts plus related mineral debris in a finer grained matrix. Lithic clasts include eucrites (with subophitic, gabbroic and partially recrystallized textures) and some feldspathic diogenite. The mineral clast population includes abundant diogenitic orthopyroxene (exhibiting undulose extinction), exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase, together with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite and troilite. The overall proportion of diogenitic to eucritic material is estimated from a large area thin section to be approximately 65:35.

Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs17.7Wo0.4; Fs24.7Wo1.8; FeO/MnO = 29-31; N =2), eucritic ferroan low-Ca pyroxene (Fs56.2Wo5.3, FeO/MnO = 31), eucritic ferroan pigeonite (Fs59.0Wo12.3, FeO/MnO = 31), eucritic augite (Fs29.6Wo40.5, FeO/MnO = 29), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs40.3Wo1.7; Fs41.9Wo5.8; Fs47.4Wo4.5; FeO/MnO = 27-30; N = 3), plagioclase (An84.7Or0.8; An93.7Or0.2; N = 2).

Classification: Howardite.

Specimens: 40.16 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder in the Harkness Collection.
