Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13884 (NWA 13884)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased in 2020 by Daniel Sheikh from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Single stone with minor fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Specimen displays a porphyritic texture containing euhedral to subhedral olivine megacrysts (Av. 1.5 mm, up to 2.5 mm) set within a finer-grained groundmass containing pigeonite, augite, plagioclase, maskelynite, pyrrhotite, Cr-ulvöspinel, merrillite, ilmenite, and Si-Al-rich glass. Most plagioclase grains/laths show transformation into maskelynite occurring primarily in the cores, while the rims remain largely unaffected.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa45.8±3.2, range Fa37.7-49.7, FeO/MnO=51±7, n=47), Pigeonite (Fs34.7±2.3Wo11.8±1.8, range Fs29.5-37.7Wo9.2-15.3, FeO/MnO=31±4, n=20), Augite (Fs21.6±1.8Wo33.5±2.5, range Fs19.3-23.4Wo31.1-37.2, FeO/MnO=27±4, n=6), Plagioclase (An59.3±7.6, range An39.6-67.6, n=22).

Classification: Martian (olivine-phyric shergottite) based on the texture, overall mineral content and compositions.

Specimens: 1.03 gram at App; main mass with D. Sheikh.
