Northwest Africa 13880 (NWA 13880)

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

History: (C. Muñecas, Expometeoritos) Two pieces were found by a nomad in a place in northwest Africa of unknown coordinates. These meteorites were eventually purchased by Carlos Muñecas from a dealer in Tindouf.

Physical characteristics: Samples are tabular to irregular in shape and have a dark brownish orange exterior. A cut face shows the interior is composed of metal decorated chondrules and matrix containing rounded metal nodules up to 1mm.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample shows a chondritic texture composed of well-defined chondrules (avg. dia. 948 µm, n=50) containing: isotropic glass, altered mesostasis, and igneous rims. These components are set within an opaque matrix (~41 vol%) containing abundant AOAs, sparse CAIs. Rounded FeNi metal accounts for ~5 vol% of sample. Additional minerals are: anorthitic and intermediate plagioclase, chromite, rare troilite, pentlandite and apatite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (type I: Fa2.8±1.9, Cr2O3=0.5±0.1, Fe/Mn=16.2±11.0, n=15, type II: Fa31.3±8.8, Fe/Mn=57.2±10.7, n=5), low Ca pyroxene (Fs3.8±2.8Wo1.6±1.5, Fe/Mn=13.9±11.3, n=10); diopside (Fs2.8±1.4Wo49.9±0.9, n=3). Matrix with low analytical totals (82.4±2.2wt%, n=10).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2). Metal decorated chondrules, hydrated matrix, Fe/Mn of type IIA chondrules, rare CAIs suggest this sample is a CR2.

Specimens: C. Muñecas (Expometeoritos) holds the 411 g main mass. A polished thin section, mount and 3 fragments weighing a total of 24.13 g are on deposit at App.
