Northwest Africa 13885 (NWA 13885)

Algeria

Find: 2020

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Found in December 2020 by meteorite hunters in who meandered from the Erg Chech 002 strewn field in Algeria. The specimen was later acquired by Darryl Pitt.

Physical characteristics: A single curvilinear mass with patches of fusion crust in evidence on a smoothly textured greenish-hued surface accented throughout by the stippling of black grains. Saw-cut surface reveals a porphyritic texture with orange-brown olivine phenocrysts set in a light green-brown groundmass. The deposit sample slice displayed a prominent, dark colored, shock melt vein.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) This meteorite has the approximate modal abundances: 45% pyroxene, 30% olivine, 20% maskelynite, with accessory ilmenite, chromite, and troilite. Pyroxenes exhibit normal igneous zoning with patches of pigeonite and augite within single grains. Olivine phenocrysts are typically 1-3 mm in size. Pyroxene grains are often finer-grained but form cumulate masses as well. Maskelynite domains are usually seen as subhedral laths with typical dimensions of 100 × 500 μm.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa45.0±3.4, Fe/Mn=53±3, CaO=0.23±0.07, (wt%), n=5; pyroxene Fs27.8±4.6Wo15.6±10.6, Fe/Mn=30±2, n=20; maskelynite An60.1±1.3Ab39.2±1.4Or0.7±0.2, n=6.

Classification: Martian shergottite (olivine phyric basalt)

Specimens: 20 g on deposit at UNM, Darryl Pitt holds the main mass.
