Northwest Africa 13946 (NWA 13946) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Jan Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite) History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in January, 2021. Physical characteristics: Two grayish fragments largely covered with fusion crust. Petrography: Breccia composed of up to 1 mm sized mineral fragments and basaltic and black impact melt clasts up to 7 mm in size in fine-grained clastic matrix. Mineral phases are predominantly compositionally zoned low-Ca pyroxene, exsolved pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase grains. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, and metallic iron. Geochemistry: zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs35.5±9.4Wo3.3±0.7 (Fs23.1-45.2Wo2.4-5.3, FeO/MnO=26-33, n=15); low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs48.3±1.2Wo3.1±1.3 (Fs46.9-50.3Wo1.8-5.8, FeO/MnO=25-29, n=19); Ca-pyroxene exsolution lamellae: Fs19.8±0.8Wo43.2±0.8 (Fs18.7-21.9Wo40.6-43.9, FeO/MnO=21-24, n=13); calcic plagioclase: An88.9±4.4 (An83.4-95.1, n=13) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
