Zufar, Oman

Find: 2019 Jan 24

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: A single fragment was found during a search for meteorites.

Physical characteristics: Broken greenish-gray individual, 2.5 × 2.0 × 1.0 cm, ablated surface with vesicular fusion crust preserved on one side.

Petrography: (J. Pape, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) The sample consist mainly of olivine pigeonitic pyroxene and maskelynitic plagioclase. Olivine grains are chemically zoned and occur as large (up to 3 mm) porphyritic grains in a relatively fine-grained matrix mostly consisting of equigranular pyroxene and interstitial maskelynite (both up to 0.5 mm). Some olivine grains are speckled with minute Cr-spinel grains. Pyrrhotite, chromite and Fe-rich spinel occur as accessory phases. Dark melt pockets up to several mm in size are common, some with large vesicles and both dendritic and grainy recrystallization. Fusion crust partly recrystallized, glass shows partial alteration. Strongly shocked. Low degree of weathering.

Geochemistry: (J. Pape) Olivine Fa38.0±18.3 (Fa19.5-79.8) (N = 24). Pigeonite has Fs28.7±5.9Wo14.9±7.2 (Fs17.7-36.6Wo5.2-33.2), mean FeO/MnO = 27.3±2.1 (N = 27). Maskelynite has An64.8±1.6Or0.5±0.1 (N = 24).

Classification: Based on petrography and mineral compositions this is an olivine phyric shergottite, strongly shocked, low weathering. Paired with Ramlat Fasad 533 (found at a distance of 1060 m).

Specimens: 3.06 g and one polished thin section at NMBE. Main mass: MHTO.
