Writeup from MB 113:

Ramlat Fasad 540 (RF 540)        19°04.157’N, 53°27.821’E

Zufar, Oman

Find: 2016 Feb 02

Classification: Enstatite chondrite (E6)

History: Found during a search for meteorites.

Physical characteristics: Dark brown fragment, partially preserved ablated surface.

Petrography: (T. Burri, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) Chondritic texture barely visible due to strong recrystallization, some relictic chondrules are 0.6-1 mm in size. All metal and sulfides are oxidized, except rare inclusions in enstatite. Feldspar grains are 50-120 μm in size. Some aggregates of graphite enclosed in oxidized metal. Low degree of shock (S2). Strongly weathered.

Geochemistry: (T. Burri) Enstatite Fs0.44±0.22Wo1.54±0.06 N=16; Ca-pyroxene Fs0.47±0.15Wo46.6±0.5 n=7; plagioclase Ab85.2±0.6 (n=4).

Classification: Enstatite chondrite, EL or EH undefined due to strong weathering, based on mineralogy and low iron content of enstatite, petrographic grade 6, low degree of shock (S2), strongly weathered.

Specimens: 1.22 g and one polished thin section at NMBE. Main mass: MHTO.
