Ramlat Fasad 542        18°55.089’N, 53°21.275’E

Zufar, Oman

Find: 2017 Feb 01

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: Found during a search for meteorites.

Physical characteristics: Three dark brown fragments, partly preserved fusion crust.

Petrography: (Åke Rosén, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) Chondrules and CAIs in dark-brown matrix, chondrules contain brown glass. Typical size of chondrules 0.6-1.5 mm. Matrix and chondrule rims contain metal, troilite and magnetite, partially replacing metal and sulfide. Unshocked (S1), low weathering.

Geochemistry: (Å. Rosén) Olivine Fa5.8±5.1, range Fa0.5-24.8 (N=40). Orthopyroxene Fs1.0±1.9Wo1.4±1.0 (N = 9). Oxygen isotopes: (R. Greenwood, OU) δ18O = -1.860 δ17O = -6.172 Δ17O = -5.205 (all permil).

Classification: Based on chondrule size, mineralogy and oxygen isotopes this is a carbonaceous chondrite, type CV3, low weathering, unshocked. Paired with Ramlat Fasad 541 found at a distance of 150 m.

Specimens: 13.0 g and one polished thin section at NMBE. Main mass: MHTO.
