Northwest Africa 13703 (NWA 13703)

(Northwest Africa)

Find: 2018

Classification: Enstatite achondrite (Aubrite)

History: Found by a nomad in the Sahara. Purchased in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Pale brown stone without fusion crust

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Highly recrystallized rock with triple junctions. Main minerals are enstatite and plagioclase. Opaque minerals are metal (mostly weathered), troilite, schreibersite. No relict chondrules were observed in the studied section.

Geochemistry: Enstatite Fs0.6±0.2Wo1.4±0.1 (n=3). Plagioclase An14.6Ab80.9Or4.6 (n=1). Kamacite Ni = 6.7 wt%, Si = 1.62 (n=3). Troilite Cr = 0.86 wt%.

Classification: Enstatite achondrite (aubrite). Classification based on mineral chemistry, mineralogy and absence of relict chondrules.

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Patrick Roustand.
