Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 13985 (NWA 13985) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2020 Feb Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict) History: Purchased in Mali in February 2020 by a Saharawi consortium represented by David Lehman. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Angular mineral clasts of exsolved pigeonite, calcic plagioclase, pigeonite, subcalcic augite and compositionally-zoned diogenitic orthopyroxene, plus some lithic clasts, are set in a fine grained matrix containing accessory silica polymoprh, ilmenite and stained kamacite. Lithic clasts comprise eucrites with various textures (microgabbroic, fine-grained ophitic, quench-textured) and rare diogenite (containing orthopyroxene exhibiting undulose extinction). The proportion of diogenitic material is estimated to be <5 vol.%. Geochemistry: Pigeonite host (Fs57.9Wo13.1, FeO/MnO = 31), augite exsolution lamella (Fs21.4Wo40.3, FeO/MnO = 25), pigeonite (Fs42.1Wo 6.9, FeO/MnO = 26), subcalcic augite (Fs39.8Wo33.8, FeO/MnO = 32), diogenitic orthopyroxene (cores Fs22.3-23.2Wo1.4-2.2, FeO/MnO = 30-33, N = 2; rims Fs51.4-51.5Wo1.1-1.2, FeO/MnO = 31-33, N = 2), plagioclase (An84.8-94.9Or0.6-0.2, N = 3). Classification: Eucrite (polymict breccia). Specimens: 25 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. D. Lehman. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
