Northwest Africa 13938 (NWA 13938) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Jan Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Temara, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Three small light-grayish fragments with minor fusion crust. Petrography: Coarse-grained igneous rock predominantly composed of up to 1.3 mm sized pyroxene and olivine grains and less abundant interstitial maskelynite. Pyroxene shows strong irregular compositional zoning. Olivine is only weakly zoned and often contains small magmatic inclusions with radial cracks extending in the host crystals. Minor phases include chromite (with variable Cr/Ti-ratios), ilmenite, troilite, and merrillite. Some cracks are filled with secondary calcite. The meteorite is highly shocked and contains shock melt veins and pockets. Geochemistry: pyroxene: Fs18.1±3.7Wo22.2±11.5 (Fs12.6-24.8Wo6.7-39.3, FeO/MnO=23±2, n=21); olivine: Fa28.0±0.7 (Fa26.9-28.8, FeO/MnO=44±2, n=13); plagioclase: An57.8±1.0Ab40.5±1.0Or1.7±0.2 (An55.8-59.3Ab39.0-42.6Or1.4-2.2, n=14) Classification: Shergottite (olivine gabbroic). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
