Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13971 (NWA 13971)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L, melt rock)

History: The meteorite was acquired by the mass holder in Mauritania.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock with some patched of fusion crust.

Petrography: The rock shows an igneous texture of euhedral to subhedral olivine and orthopyroxene 50-100 µm grains with interstitial Si,Al-rich mesostasis. Pyroxene often poikilitically encloses olivine. Olivine and low-Ca-pyroxene show minor compositional zoning and some low-Ca pyroxenes are overgrown by thin Ca-pyroxene margins. Opaque phases include chromite, sulfides, rare FeNi metal, and abundant alteration products. No relict chondrules have been found in the section studied. The meteorite contains shock veins and melt pockets.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa24.6±0.5 (Fa23.7-25.3, FeO/MnO=44±2, n=15); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs18.4±1.1Wo2.9±1.2 (Fs16.7-20.4Wo1.4-4.6, FeO/MnO=29±2, n=15); Ca-pyroxene rims: Fs15.4±2.5Wo23.2±10.5 (Fs12.6-18.7Wo8.9-34.2, FeO/MnO=22±2, n=6); mesostasis (wt%): SiO2: 70.9±2.3, Al2O3: 22.2±1.3, Na2O: 2.5±1.3, K2O: 0.49±0.02, CaO: 2.00±0.23, MgO: 0.33±0.39, FeO: 1.27±0.87, TiO2: 0.25±0.05, N=6

Classification: Melt rock. Mineral chemistry of olivine and low-Ca pyroxene suggest strong affinity to L chondrites.
