Northwest Africa 13987 (NWA 13987) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2020 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK4) History: Purchased by Craig Zlimen from an Algerian meteorite dealer. Physical characteristics: Single stone, dark sandblasted exterior. Saw cut reveal numerous distinct chondrules set in a brown-fine-grained matrix. Scattered CAIs are visible throughout. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) This meteorite has primarily type-II porphyritic chondrules. Fine grained feldspar was observed throughout. Approximately 90% of the pyroxene is diopsidic, with low-Ca pyroxene being a minor phase. Ubiquitous chromium-bearing magnetite was detected throughout. Geochemistry: (A. Ross, UNM) Olivine Fa30.5±4.4, Fe/Mn=109±8, NiO=0.36±0.09 Cr2O3= 0.09±0.15 (wt%), n=7; diopside Fs4.0±5.1Wo41.8±5.5, n=5; magnetite Cr2O3=2.7±0.3 wt%. Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite CK4. CK based on the presence of chromium-bearing magnetite and absence of metal. Presence of fine-grained recrystallized plagioclase suggests type 4 rather than type 3. Specimens: 62 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Craig Zlimen holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
