Northwest Africa 14049 (NWA 14049)

Purchased: 2020 Nov

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite, polymict)

History: Purchased by Luc Labenne in November 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Complex polymict breccia composed of angular mineral clasts plus some lithic clasts in a fine grained matrix. Mineral clasts include diogenitic orthopyroxene (exhibiting undulose extinction and with a range of compositions), exsolved eucritic pigeonite (with hosts and exsolution lamellae of several different compositions), olivine, anorthite and calcic plagioclase (polycrystalline). Rare lithic clasts include diabasic eucrite (composed predominantly of shock-darkened pyroxene and maskelynite) and gabbroic eucrite (containing polycrystalline calcic plagioclase). The overall proportion of eucritic material is estimated to be <10 vol.%. Accessory phases include silica polymorph, troilite and chromite (with variable Ti and V contents). Secondary calcite and barite are present.

Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs19.5-30.6Wo1.1-2.7, FeO/MnO = 26-37), pigeonite (Fs35.9-48.4Wo6.0-12.5, FeO/MnO = 28-32, N = 3), olivine (Fa36.7, FeO/MnO = 52), low-Ca pyroxene host (Fs54.3Wo4.6, FeO/MnO = 30), augite exsolution lamella (Fs26.0Wo40.5, FeO/MnO = 29), low-Ca pyroxene host (Fs40.4Wo2.8, FeO/MnO = 27), augite exsolution lamella (Fs17.4Wo42.9, FeO/MnO = 24), anorthite (An97.0Or0.0), calcic plagioclase (An77.3-88.6Or1.7-0.4, N = 3).

Classification: Diogenite (polymict breccia, shocked).

Specimens: 20.9 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. L. Labenne.
