Northwest Africa 13864 (NWA 13864)

Purchased: 2019 Nov

Classification: LL6-7

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in November 2019 from a dealer in Timbuktu, Mali.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia consisting of type 6 clasts (containing remnant chondrules) and Type 7 clasts (lacking chondrules and exhibiting triple grain junction textures) set in a finer grained matrix. Accessory phases include merrillite, taenite, troilite and pentlandite (the last three as relatively large composite grains). Minor secondary barite is also present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa31.7±1.4, range Fa29.0-32.7, N = 6), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs25.3±1.3Wo2.1±0.3, range Fs23.8-26.0Wo1.7-2.4, N = 5), augite (Fs10.4±0.1Wo43.9±0.1, range Fs10.3-10.5Wo43.8-44.0, N = 2), plagioclase (Ab84.6An11.0Or4.4).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL6-7 breccia).

Specimens: 15.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
