Northwest Africa 13996 (NWA 13996)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Enstatite chondrite (EL melt rock)

History: Purchased in 2018 by Geologist Juan Aviles Poblador from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Single weathered stone with minor fusion crust. Impact melt pockets and vesicles are present in varying abundance between different fragments and slices of the sample.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) This sample exhibits an equigranular texture consisting primarily of recrystallized grains of enstatite (~94 vol.% ,Av. 75±10 µm, n=20), and accessory albitic plagioclase, oldhamite, daubreelite, troilite, silica glass, and sparse grains of kamacite (< 1 vol. %, containing ~1.5 wt.% Si, n=3). A few relict chondrules were observed, most displaying a radial pyroxene texture (Av. 1 mm, up to 3 mm, n=4).

Geochemistry: Enstatite (Fs0.1±0.1Wo1.4±0.1, range Fs0.0-0.6Wo1.1-1.6, n=70), Plagioclase (An16.2±0.6 Or3.8±0.4, range An15.5-16.9 Or3.1-4.2, n=8).

Classification: Enstatite-melt rock (EL-melt rock). EL due to the amount of Si in kamacite, melt rock due to the overall texture.

Specimens: 21.1 g and a thin section at Cascadia; main mass with Juan Aviles Poblador.
