Northwest Africa 14111 (NWA 14111) Tindouf, Algeria Purchased: 2021 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite) History: (C. Muñecas) One piece was found by a nomad in a place of unknown coordinates in northwest Africa. The meteorite was eventually purchased by Carlos Muñecas from a dealer of Tindouf. Physical characteristics: Sample has a dark brown exterior wind-ablated exterior that is partially coated with caliche. The cut face shows the interior is a weakly brecciated igneous sample. Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is dominated by ophitic- textured domains composed of exsolved pyroxenes and twinned plagioclase. Some shows some thin comminuted zone along fractures. Additional minerals are: Ti-poor chromite, ilmenite, secondary calcite, a Si-polymorph. Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs61.7±0.5Wo2.2±0.3, Mg#=36.9±0.6, Fe/Mn=28.9±0.7, n=12); high Ca pyroxene (Fs26.9±1.5Wo43.5±2.0, Fe/Mn=29.6±1.1, n=12); plagioclase (An91.8±2.5Or0.6±0.1, n=12). Classification: HED achondrite (monomict eucrite). Based on textures, mineral compositions, magnetic susceptibility, sample is a basaltic eucrite. Specimens: Carlos Muñecas (Expometeoritos) holds the main mass. A polished thin section and a 24.97 g endcut are on deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
