Northwest Africa 14136 (NWA 14136)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite, olivine)

History: Purchased by Jay Piatek in 2021 from a Moroccan meteorite dealer.

Physical characteristics: Single stone mostly covered in black fusion crust, with some slightly weathered patches of exposed interior. Fresh broken surfaces of the deposit sample show a significantly brecciated interior of primarily coarse, pale-green pyroxene grains. A few scattered dark oxide grains are also visible.

Petrography: (A. Ross and C. Agee, UNM) Backscattered electron images shown that pyroxene is the dominant mineral in this meteorite (orthopyroxenite). The pyroxenes are very uniform in composition (no zoning observed). Olivine is scattered throughout and makes up approximately 10% of the mineralogy. Olivines are also uniform in chemical composition. A single plagioclase grain (100 × 20 μm) was observed as an inclusion in a larger olivine grain. Chromite grains up to 1 mm are present. Trace amounts of troilite, Fe-metal, and augite were also detected.

Geochemistry: (A. Ross and C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa28.6±0.2, Fe/Mn=48±2, n=8; low-Ca pyroxene Fs24.3±0.6Wo2.9±1.0, Fe/Mn=30±2, n=8; plagioclase An85.9.

Classification: Diogenite (olivine-bearing)

Specimens: 41 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds the main mass.
