Northwest Africa 14149 (NWA 14149)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK4)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish to greenish rock with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish to greenish interior and is composed of sharply delineated and well separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 800 µm) and sparse CAIs (up to 2 mm) set in abundant recrystallized matrix dominated by ferroan Ni-bearing olivine. More minor phases include low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, and intermediate plagioclase. Opaque phases are abundant Cr-rich magnetite, FeS, and pentlandite; metal was not detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa29.4±0.2 (Fa28.9-29.6, FeO/MnO=130±13; NiO=0.50±0.04 wt%, n=10); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs25.1±0.2Wo1.6±1.2 (Fs24.8-25.5Wo0.7-0.8, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs9.3±0.3Wo48.2±0.4 (Fs8.8-9.6Wo47.5-48.6, n=5); feldspar: An30.2-79.9Ab19.8-65.4Or0.2-4.4, n=6; magnetite contains 4.5±0.2 wt% Cr2O3, n=3
