Northeast Africa 034 (NEA 034)

Libya

Purchased: 2020 Dec

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in December 2020 from a Libyan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed, closely packed, glass-bearing, unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 860±440 µm, N = 25; including one chondrule > 5 mm across in the studied thin section) are set in a fine grained matrix containing troilite, kamacite, pigeonite, subcalcic augite, sodic plagioclase and chromite. No phosphates were observed.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.0±11.0, range Fa1.5-37.5, N = 8; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.03-0.91 wt.%, mean 0.17±0.28 wt.%, N = 9), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs13.2±7.5Wo1.1±0.8, range Fs4.6-18.6Wo0.4-2.1, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs29.6Wo13.2), subcalcic augite (Fs5.0±3.0Wo34.7±2.5, range Fs2.9-7.1Wo32.9-36.4, N = 2). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.11.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 44 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
