Writeup from MB 110:
Hillsboro 32.916, -107.492 New Mexico, United States Find: 2019 Oct 27 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5) History: Found by Don Musser while he was silver prospecting near Wick’s Gulch. Location of find is a high desert area with many alluvial features with potential for secondary transport mechanisms at work. Physical characteristics: Saw cut reveals numerous closely packed small chondrules and abundant metal and Fe-oxide grains set in an orange-brown colored matrix. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM; D. Dickens, GL) Microprobe examination of a polished mount and optical examination of petrographic thin section shows numerous texturally equilibrated porphyritic chondrules as well as some larger radial chondrules; secondary plagioclase grains are <50 µm in size, abundant Fe-Ni metal, oxidized metal, and extensive oxide veinlets. Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM; D. Dickens, GL) Olivine Fa18.2±0.2, Fe/Mn=38±1, n=6; low-Ca pyroxene Fs16.2±0.3Wo1.2±0.5, Fe/Mn=22±1, n=6. Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (H5) Shock stage is S3; weathering grade is W2. Specimens: 6.6 g including a probe mount and thin section on deposit at UNM, Don Musser holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
