Northwest Africa 14220 (NWA 14220)

Purchased: 2021 May

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in May, 2021.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict achondritic melt breccia composed of up to 4 mm sized lithic clasts and 600 µm sized minerals fragments set in abundant melt rock matrix displaying pronounced flow structures. Main minerals are zoned low-Ca pyroxene, exsolved pyroxenes, and calcic plagioclase. Melt regions are composed of recrystallized pyroxenes displaying mottled compositional zoning and fine-grained, partly fibrous feldspar. Entrained minerals show resorption textures. Lithic clasts are basaltic and impact melt clasts. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, FeS, and metallic iron. Eucritic material dominates over diogenitic low-Ca pyroxene.

Geochemistry: zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs27.7±4.2Wo2.6±0.4 (Fs22.6-35.2Wo2.4-3.9, FeO/MnO=28-32, n=10); low-Ca pyroxene host crystals to augite lamellae: Fs43.8±0.7Wo4.5±0.5 (Fs42.9-45.0Wo4.0-5.3, FeO/MnO=26-27, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs19.3±0.2Wo42.9±0.2 (Fs19.0-19.8Wo42.6-43.1, FeO/MnO=22-25, n=7); olivine: Fa27.4±0.6, FeO/MnO=43±2, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An96.9±0.8 (An95.1-97.9, n=10)
