Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14240 (NWA 14240)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H6)

History: Purchased in 2020 by Dean Bessey from a mineral dealer in Erfoud, Morocco

Physical characteristics: Individual stone with regmaglypts and partly abraded fusion crust.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Unbrecciated ordinary chondrite with high metal content. It shows a strongly recrystallized texture with blurred outlines of chondrule relicts. Secondary feldspar grains mostly >50 µm.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean olivine composition is Fa19.0±0.4 (Fa18.4-19.6; n=10); mean low-Ca pyroxene composition is Fs16.5±0.2Wo1.5±0.1 (Fs16.2-16.8Wo1.3-1.6; n=10).

Classification: H chondrite based on the high metal content and mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 6 based on the equilibrated state of olivine and pyroxene and large grain size of secondary plagioclase.
