Northwest Africa 14179 (NWA 14179)

Purchased: 2020 Dec

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (C3, ungrouped)

History: Purchased by Eric Twelker in December 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL; L. Garvie, ASU) Well-formed, relatively small chondrules (apparent diameter 230±130 µm, N = 20) are set in a very fine grained matrix (~50 vol. %, almost opaque in thin section). Accessory phases identified by electron microprobe analysis include Al-Ti-diopside, pentlandite, kamacite and minor pure Fe metal (associated with some forsterite in chondrules). Fe-rich material with low oxide sum ~91 wt.% present as rims on some chondrules appears to be a possible chlorite-like phase. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern shows sharp reflections from silicates (bimodal olivine dominated by low Fa and high Fa components, as well as clinopyroxene), pentlandite, pyrrhotite, magnetite and calcite, which sit on a broad scattering component centered around 2.7 Å, consistent with a high percentage of amorphous material. Discrete reflections for phyllosilicates are lacking, though a broad, low-intensity, low-angle scattering centered around 12Å, is consistent with a minor component possessing smectite-like layering.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa29.0±25.5, range Fa0.3-63.1, N = 6), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs15.2±22.1Wo1.1±0.1, range Fs1.1-40.7Wo1.1-1.2, N = 3), subcalcic augite (Fs2.0Wo29.8), Al-Ti-diopside (Fs1.1Wo44.8, Al2O3 13.2 wt.%, TiO2 0.9 wt.%). Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): analysis of acid-washed subsamples by laser fluorination gave, respectively, δ17O -8.622, -12.071, -7.239; δ18O -4.730, -8.269, -2.618; Δ17O -6.125, -7.704, -5.857 per mil (all data linearized).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (C3 ungrouped). This material is very similar to Telakoast 001 and NWA 14139 in many respects, including texture, mineralogy, mineral compositions, and oxygen isotopes (plotting in the same region below the CCAM trend).

Specimens: 20.8 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Twelker.
