Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14183 (NWA 14183) Algeria Purchased: 2021 Mar Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite) History: Found in Algeria and purchased by Jason Bliss in March 2021 from a Moroccan dealer in Spain. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of subequal amounts of eucrite and diogenite lithic clasts plus related crystal debris within a finer grained matrix containing minor altered kamacite. Eucrite lithologies include intergranular, subophitic and gabbroic textural varieties composed of exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite and troilite. Diogenite clasts are composed predominantly of orthopyroxene with minor accessory chromite. A thin, dark glassy shock veinlet crossuts the studied thin section. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene hosts (Fs47.8-59.2Wo2.1-3.1, FeO/MnO = 28-31, N = 3), augite exsolution lamellae (Fs20.4-21.7Wo43.7-42.2, FeO/MnO = 25-29, N = 2), diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs21.5-24.5Wo2.2-2.7, FeO/MnO = 24-30, N = 4), pigeonite (Fs0.3Wo17.8, FeO/MnO = 32), low-Ca pyroxene in matrix (Fs38.2Wo2.1, FeO/MnO = 26), plagioclase (An85.0-92.5Or0.7-0.1, N = 3). Classification: Howardite. Specimens: 22 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. J. Bliss. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
