Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14252 (NWA 14252)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019 Sep

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

Physical characteristics: Single stone, lacking fusion crust

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Igneous rock with microgabbroic texture (grain size 150 µm). Main minerals are Ca-pyroxene and plagioclase. Pyroxene show both fine exsolution lamellae and zoning with Fe poor cores, sometimes in the same grain. Accessory minerals: ilmenite, chromite, primary baryte (with both euhedral and rounded shapes) set in plagioclase.

Geochemistry: Pyroxene Fs41.6±4.8Wo29.4±5.9, range Fs36.8-48.0, FeO/MnO 32.8±1.9 (n=5), core Fs36.0Wo6.4 (n=1). Plagioclase An92.8±0.9Ab7.1±0.8Or0.1±0.1 (n=3).

Classification: Achondrite (eucrite). The dominance of Ca-pyroxene over low-Ca pyroxene, the iron poor pyroxene cores and the abundance of euhedral baryte in plagioclase are unusual features.

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Kuntz
