Northwest Africa 14253 (NWA 14253)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

Physical characteristics: Dark stone. Cut surface reveals dark interior with mm clasts.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Brecciated rock with igenous clast in a clastic matrix. The clasts have a variety of texture (gabbroic, melt rock, subophitic). Main minerals are pyroxene (some exsolved, some zoned) and plagioclase (abundant). Accessory chromite, ilmenite, chromite, primary baryte, a variety of silica polymorph (sometimes as 100-200 grains, sometimes interspersed as small grains in pyroxene), rare sulfides and rare metal.

Geochemistry: Pyroxene Fs41.9±12.7Wo8.7±5.7, FeO/MnO 28.0±2.5 (n=4). Plagioclase An89.7Ab10.1Or0.2 (n=2). Chromite Cr#0.81.

Classification: Achondrite (eucrite, brecciated)
