Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14348 (NWA 14348) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: Ureilite Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Coarse-grained ultramafic rock (grain size mostly between 0.5 and 1 mm) with curved intergranular boundaries, consisting of olivine and pyroxene grains. Reverse zoning of olivine grains with Mg-rich zones at the margins and along cracks. Accessories are Ni-free metal (partly terrestrially oxidized) and graphite, concentrated along grain boundaries and cracks. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean composition of olivine cores: Fa12.2±0.3; mean CaO concentration: 0.29 wt%; n=12. Olivine rims: Fa2.7±0.1; n=3. Mean composition of pyroxene grains: Fs11.0±0.3 Wo8.8±0.2 (Fs10.5-11.4 Wo8.5-9.0); n=11. The mean concentration of Cr2O3 (wt%) in olivine and pyroxene is 0.57 and 1.19, respectively. Classification: Ureilite, based on modal composition, mineral chemistry, occurrence of considerable amounts of graphite, and typical reduction rims (reverse zoning) around olivine grains. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
