Northwest Africa 14356 (NWA 14356)

Morocco

Purchased: 2020 Jun

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5)

History: A small single stone weighing 31 g was purchased by Salaheddin Samrani at Erfoud in June 2020

Physical characteristics: The main mass is almost completely covered by black fusion crust.

Petrography: (V.Moggi Cecchi, L.Fabrizi, G.Pratesi UniFi): The thin section shows an equilibrated chondritic texture. Various chondrule types are visible (PP, PO, RP and BO), set in a fine grained matrix. Both olivine and orthopyroxene are homogeneous. The main opaque phases are Iron oxides, Fe-Ni alloys and troilite, scattered in the matrix as individual grains.

Geochemistry: EMP (V.Moggi Cecchi, L.Fabrizi, G.Pratesi UniFi); Olivine in both chondrules and matrix (Fa23.7±0.7Fo76.3±0.6; Fe/Mn = 49; n=14); low-Ca pyroxene in both chondrules and matrix (Fs19.4±0.8En79.6±07Wo1.1±0.3; Fe/Mn = 23, n=16);

Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (L5); S1; W1;

Specimens: The main mass, weighing 25 g, is owned by Salaheddin Samrani; the type specimen, weighing 5.2 g, and one thin section are on deposit at MSN-FI (Inventory # I-3662).
