Illizi, Algeria

Find: 2020 Nov 4

Classification: Lunar meteorite (feldspathic breccia)

History: Found on November 4, 2020, near the town of Bordj Omar Driss. Later purchased by Matthew Stream in 2021 from a meteorite dealer in Algeria.

Physical characteristics: Many small stones containing weathered fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is a fragmental breccia primarily composed of angular to sub-rounded anorthitic clasts (up to 3 mm) and isolated mineral fragments set in a fine-grained matrix. Accessory phases include chromite and ilmenite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa39.4±1.6, range Fa37.5-42.9, Fe/Mn=80±10, n=17), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs29.9 Wo4.0, Fe/Mn=48, n=1), Pigeonite (Fs30.1±0.9 Wo8.9±2.7, range Fs29.1-30.7 Wo7.3-12.1, Fe/Mn=50±7, n=3), Augite (Fs14.5 Wo40.1, Fe/Mn=54, n=1), Plagioclase (An96.5±0.6, range An95.4-97.7, n=33).

Classification: Lunar (feldspathic fragmental breccia).

Specimens: 20.2 g at Cascadia; main mass with Matthew Stream.
