Northwest Africa 14228 (NWA 14228)

Purchased: 2021 Jan

Classification: Ureilite (polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Ouarzazate, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Three dark brownish fragments with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia composed of up to 2 mm sized mineral fragments and lithic clasts set in a fine-grained clastic matrix. Dominant minerals are olivine with reduced rims, compositionally homogeneous olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, and feldspar. Minor phases are silica and FeS. Lithic clasts include impact melt and carbonaceous C1/2 clasts. The meteorite contains flaky graphite.

Geochemistry: olivine cores: Fa22.3±0.1 (Fa22.1-22.4, n=10), contains 0.62±0.04 wt% Cr2O3 and 0.37±0.02 wt% CaO; reduced rims in olivine: Fa3.2-3.8; homogeneous olivine: Fa12.2±0.1, n=8; low-Ca pyroxene: Fs10.8±0.1Wo4.8±0.1 (Fs10.7-10.9Wo4.7-4.9, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs16.0±0.1Wo38.2±0.2 (Fs15.9-16.2Wo37.8-38.4, n=7); feldspar: An35.3-38.6Ab61.2-64.5Or0.1-0.2, n=6
